Old Business
October: Randy volunteered to take care of watering on the range in exchange for resigning the position of Range Manager. Robert is still trying to gather information on Pope and Young scorer training.
Please send any information, news or pictures that you would like to have added to our website to Shaun Ayers sayers@ucdavis.edu. The website can be accessed at http://yolobowmen.com/.
November: Minutes were read by Zach for the previous Norcal Meeting and the last Yolo Bowmen meeting. For further information on becoming a Pope and Young Scorer, please visit their website. The club's shirts have arrived, so please pick up your ordered size and be prepared to pay when you pick it up. Prices vary according to size.
Range Report- Randy Gastineau
October: We need to glue targets to prepare for winter, there was a suggestion to use Elmer's glue instead of the special glue we’ve been using, although there was some concern about whether it would hold up in the rain. We also need to smash/switch bales at upcoming work parties. Some of the bales on the south range are really soft so we need to work on repairing those first.
November: Bales are soft and need to be switched and/or resmashed. There is a large water leak on the south range and the idea of turning off the water for the winter was discussed. The problem we had with the well has been fixed. The highest priority for the next work party should be gluing targets. We should also mow for one last time before the ground gets too flooded and muddy. The idea of getting new bales was introduced by Randy. The club is looking at bales from a company called Pacific Bow Butts, they are highly compressed bales that weigh about 190lbs and are $60 a piece. With rotation they should last about 3-4 years. We also discussed the issue of protecting the new bales from the rain and possible vandalism. For more information on Pacific Bow Butts, please visit www.pacificbowbutts.com . It was suggested that we should also look into layered carpet targets as an alternative. There will be more discussion at the next meeting.
Financial Report – Robert Tabaraz
For details on club finances please attend the meetings.
Equipment Report – Chad Reis
October: The equipment shed was broken into once and fortunately the police stopped the people the second time. Please be on the look out for people doing suspicious things. We now have a host from the county that will be here for six months, hopefully this will reduce the number of break-in’s.
November: Our new tool set was recently stolen so the group voted to replace it as soon as possible. Both mowers are running fine thanks to Chad’s diligent maintenance.
New Business
October: Be aware of people doing things they shouldn't be doing out on the range. Please do not be afraid to go up to people and ask them if they have a membership, want to become a member, and if not have they paid their money to shoot. Mark is still trying to set up an indoor shooting venue with the management of the Yolo County Fairgrounds. Yolo County is requiring us to pay a property tax of $1700. Robert is trying to work out a co-payment of this tax with the president of the horseshoe club. We will also try to appeal the tax based on what we believe is an over valuation of the buildings. New locks have been put on the moneyboxes that cannot be cut with a bolt cutter; hopefully this will deter the thieves. The broadhead league targets have been ordered but there will be a delay in shipment because of a fire at the manufacturing plant. At the next meeting we will have nominations and for the 2009 officers positions. The 4-H archery instructor is stepping down and anyone who is interested or knows anyone who is interested can talk to Mark or Robert W. The classes will go on for about ten weekends in late winter/ early spring. If more than one person is interested, they could work out a possible rotating schedule. Instructors MUST BE CERTIFIED.
The point of the 4H class is to teach kids the basics of archery, how to shoot a bow and do it safely. Raglan has not called about finishing the repairs on our 3D targets, Mark will check in with him. We also discussed a possible 50th anniversary barbeque and exclusive club member shoot in March. We should probably advertise the 50th anniversary and related events on the Oasis shoot fliers to increase interest.
November: Mark will contact the Raglan target company because they have billed us almost twice as much as the original estimate for the target repairs. They did not discuss any additional charges with us. Paul Ackerman suggested that our 50th anniversary should be put on the flier for the next Oasis shoot to generate more interest and attention, all agreed. We continued the discussion of having an anniversary celebration in April of 2009; possibly a wild game feed? This will be discussed more at future meetings. Paul will contact Janie, who works at Sam's club, about getting a couple of sheet cakes for the celebration with our club logo on them. If you want to give input please attend the next meeting. We are having some issues with the county regarding the "fee" that we charge. We discussed changing the word "fee" on the cash boxes to "donation" because we do not own the land and cannot charge a fee to use it. Please visit the Dept. of Fish and Game, Maya Archers, or CBH websites if you are interested in becoming an instructor for IBEP (International Bowhunter Education Program), the club could really benefit from having some certified instructors. You must take the instructor class for both bowhunter education and a hunter education to be eligible to teach. We are still having a problem with vehicles on the range; please tell people who are driving on the range to leave. Also congratulations to all who placed in the Nor-cal outdoor shoot held at Eldorado Hills in October. Steve started the discussion of possibly having an outreach program to increase public interest and membership, possibly starting in April. The biggest issue will be getting enough equipment, if anyone has extra bows, especially kid size, please consider allowing the club to borrow them for this event. We will also talk to John Hughes at Frontline Archery about possibly ordering a few genesis bows. The group discussed the pros and cons of raising dues next year but came to no conclusion. We would need to make sure that everything on the range is in great shape if we are going to raise the prices. We also discussed changing the due collection time from January to June or July, as more people will be on the range. Please encourage people to join the club if they are not members. We should also work on increasing participation in club shoot Sundays. Please attend the next meeting; we will hold elections for the 2009 officers.
