Minutes of February 2008;
The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:20 pm at the range by club president, Robert Williams. Present at the meeting were Alex Vervilos, Shaun Ayers, Robert Williams, Dave Haverstock, Robert Tabarez, Randy Gastineau, Mark Rubio, Bill Hornof Sr, Jim Wohlgemuth. Steve Synhorst, Al Rafferty, Dusty Robben, John Hughes, Chad Reis, and Devin Campisi.
Old Business;
Please send any information, news or pictures that you would like to have added to our website to Shaun Ayers ( sayers@ucdavis.edu ). The website can be accessed at http://yolobowmen.com/, go and check out the hunting photos already uploaded, and read about the history of the club. Memberships are due beginning January 1, 2008. Please renew as soon as possible. Also remember that membership forms can be downloaded from the website for prospective new members. Randy had some really nice Yolo Bowmen business cards made up, and passed them out to members and officers. The 48 yd target moneybox still needs to be moved closer to the shooting area. Hopefully that can be tackled at one of the upcoming work parties. We continued the discussion of alcohol use during the Oasis shoot. A decision was made to post no alcohol use signs at key places that everyone could see. Dusty generously offered to make up the signs for us, thanks. An announcement will also be made prior to the shoot. Finally, Oasis shoot flyers are being distributed to the local archery shops.
New Business:
Steve started the new business discussion with a reminder that we are running low on target pins. Apparently a new jig for making pins is in the works, and Bill Sr. offered to sharpen the pins once they are made up. We have about 75 pins left. Dave reminded the group of targets still needing to be ordered prior to Oasis, Mark said he would take care of it. Robert and Mark had a meeting with county personnel, discussing the park master plan, the timing of implementation, and other issues important to the club. According to the county it will be tough to get a long-term lease for the indoor range. Leases are normally only done on a five year basis. The county is very short on personnel and money, so implementation of the master plan may take a long time. This will make planning and moving forward on an indoor range much more difficult. It was mentioned that a dog park is less likely to be put into the regional park now because the city of Davis has stopped pushing the issue. We will get another park host, as soon as he gets a replacement at his current post. With regard to landscaping, the county would like all further planting on the range to be native. I guess we’re lucky Dave planted all of the fast growing trees when he did. Al moved that we start work on the new practice range after the Oasis shoot. It was seconded and approved by all attending the meeting. In order to get this going we need measurements, cost estimates, etc. for the shade structure. Also, the size and location of any permanent infrastructure needs to be run by the county before construction. Devon, a landscape architecture major, offered to help lay out the new practice range, thanks Devon. Mark then discussed a plan to allow sheep to graze down grass along the margins of the range. Dave in particular was concerned about the sheep eating trees and shrubs, and the possibility that removing the grass now would promote star thistle growth. The sheep grazing has gone forward with oversight. Please be aware that certain parts of the range will be closed while this grazing is in progress. Finally Dave and Al discussed the close proximity of the safety fence at the end of the 80 yd target. Please be careful shooting this target if people are using parklands beyond the fence.
Range Report:
Randy brought up the need to do target repair, including the replacement of a few bales. We also need to burn the accumulated piles of debris and glue targets to cardboard. This started a discussion of the best adhesive to use, paint or wallpaper glue, and the pros and cons of each. Randy also suggested sending out emails alerting members to upcoming work parties. Please note the work parties listed in the upcoming events section below.
Remember: NO SMOKING ON THE RANGE
